Ancients of VRC

Updated: Oct 16, 2022

Newbie Night

  • The first impression was that the Newbie Night was (thankfully) not too crowded, which the guide mentioned was somewhat rare to see! Kicking it off with introductions, the variety of backgrounds that both the event hosts and our group of attendees brought up surprised me a good few times.

    • Following one attendee’s intro, they admitted their favorite anime character just so happened to be what I had as my avatar. 😂 I had zero idea how to process that in the moment, but they have honestly been one of a few friends I’ll regularly check in with / bump into at subsequent server events! And, indeed, their Discord pic literally has that character and themselves vibing together in it, so it was no joke!

  • It was funny to see everyone realize that we were all on PC, so the post-introductions world hopping activities could commence by visiting the higher-end worlds! The excited energy of everyone sharing things they stumbled across really is contagious and endearing; I love it a ton.

  • One of the most memorable moments arose because of a technical design complication in a giant bridge world that an Ancients member took us through, after we managed to get split up. Turns out there wasn’t a way to hail the rest of the group–who were going to drop a portal to the next destination from halfway down the bridge! So said Ancients member changed into a giant mech avatar and started to just yeet people into the sky to close the gap, which more or less worked after some trial and error!

  • There was also another user who’d been with the Ancients community I interacted with a fair bit used VR-ASL and pens for talking, which I hadn’t run into before! They have also been a consistent source of cool and happy moments whenever we cross paths since and I thank them for their vibes. 😭

Game Night

When we got to this custom-made-for-this vaporwave world, there were suddenly a ton more people than I’d been exposed to in VRChat at that point. Which made it all the more impressive how effectively their event hosts structured and led everyone into different game worlds to ensure everyone had a good time. I think it worked out to roughly 30 minutes spread across 3-5 different guides, some paired off:

  • Magic Freeze Tag left me absolutely winded despite how you’re just using left stick 💀💦 but so fun.

  • I had actually gotten to play Super VR Ball once in the past my first week, and I got doofishly happy about being minorly savvy enough to discuss different ways to try and play it with the other Ancients!

  • Could even play a game like Ghost (very Trouble in Terrorist Town-y) which I’d normally never think to play, simply since now I wasn’t with 100% strangers anymore! Even if I rarely lasted long. 😂

Between the games, it was fun to exchange impressions with the users I’d just gone through the newcomer event with, since we all tried out different ones and could share our take on them. Once we’d run through all the games it had been about 2 hours, on top of the 2 hours at the newbie event… and I couldn’t get the thought of “so this was how it felt like to be out doing things with friends on the weekend, huh” out of my head. 😂💦

  • I believe they had an afterparty from that point on, and, I found it encouraging how their behavior when it came to drinking contrasted VRChat memes and player PSAs. They were reminding each other as they geared up to play a drinking game to alternate with water, not push their limits, and that booze wasn’t a requirement to just play and have fun there. Some people just enjoyed both–fair enough. 💖

  • Having reached midnight, I was exhausted from stacking events all that Saturday, but folks were already getting involved in a card game of some kind. So I decided to just write a message––

––...only to come back to the Discord the day after and see someone had posted it in #photos. aaa. 🥰
