Including a quick bit here on some utilities long-time users showed me when I was starting out, which I still apply pretty much every time I play VRChat. Use what you like; let me know if you have other favorites! 👍
"Playspace Mover"
Why bother?
Adjusting for your model sitting at the wrong height in a seat or feet floating off the floor (admittedly the Actual Height in VRChat settings does this already, but can help with minor daily IRL shifts)
Sitting a smaller avatar on top of someone else’s normal/larger avatar
Seeing over a crowd from the back, e.g. to not be obscured in a group photo
Forcing an avatar (if it has the anim!) into sitting on the floor, not just crouching
How to get/use it?
Disclaimer for Oculus players: have to be okay with changing over to run VRChat through the Steam library rather than the native Oculus app’s version in order to make use of this! (It worked fine for me back when I used a Rift S.)
Install https://store.steampowered.com/app/1009850/OVR_Advanced_Settings/
Boot up SteamVR as well as OVR Advanced Settings from your Steam library
Now when you bring up the SteamVR console menu (usually a home/shoulder button), you’ll see an additional icon that mentions “OVR Advanced Settings” when hovered over
Click this and select the “Motion” category from the sidebar, should see “Space Drag”

XSOverlay
Why bother?
Avoiding AFK mode while using desktop during a conversation in VRChat
Having a notepad up to write on while playing, a Discord window open to take chats, etc
Extremely niche, but I’ve heard a friend use the in-game overlay of a fighting game while in an avatar for said character (colors and everything), seated in a public world that has a video player they could point to them streaming the Twitch game for virtual couch play
Combined with this parser (latest ver.) you can receive pop-ups e.g. as players join/leave
As far as the debates about similar software like OVRToolkit, I’ve yet to really see a breakaway winner, so definitely research alternatives if you wish! The main reason I chose XSOverlay was due to it coming from a VRChat dev.
How do I get/use it?
$10 from https://store.steampowered.com/app/1173510/XSOverlay/
Boot up separately from Steam library after opening SteamVR prior
Rotate your wrist to look at the opposite side of it (this is an Index user with 3 trackers)
Click on the top Layout Mode button (just left of “GPU” in above picture)
Click on the “+” or keyboard icon that appears to spawn a new window or the keyboard
Configure from there as needed, confer online tutorials like the one pictured above.
Note that this is a fraction of the features offered by these programs and they are by no means limited to VRChat. Absolutely worth a dive into tutorial videos on YouTube if you’re curious! The above pictures were pulled from this one for OVR Advanced Settings and this for XSOverlay, big thanks to the channel!
